Applications

Applications

Scanning electron microscopy is a widely used technique in science and engineering. Some of its most common applications are in material science, biological science, geology, medical science, and forensic science. This technique may also be used to create digital artwork. Using scanning electron microscopes, various tasks can be done, some of these are:

  • Evaluating the morphology of the samples (for example, observing the material in the form of bulks, coatings, or cuts)
  • Phase analysis and evaluation of link differences through contrast and using a detector
  • Molecular imaging using metal and fluorescent probes in biological samples
  • Performing lithography in micro and nano dimensions (removing materials from samples; cutting parts or removing progressive cuts from samples (for example, using a focused ion beam)
  • X-ray analysis of samples for microanalysis (EDS)
